About Me

I'm a freelance artist, designer and demonstrator and have been involved in arts and craft my whole life in one way or another. I design stamps for top British company Personal Impressions, under the "Lindsay Mason Designs" brand, as well as papers, templates and other crafting products. I'm a certified Ranger Educator and my first book,"Stamping", was published in 2009. I also design regular projects for Crafts Beautiful magazine and have made guest appearances from time to time on QVC. I've recently joined You Tube under the name of LindsayMason1000 where I'm posting short technique videos and you can buy my paintings and hand crafted pieces from my Etsy shop. My work takes me all around the country demonstrating stamping, papercrafts and general inkiness! When I'm not working, I love gardening, church & community activities, nature watching, journalling, music and theatre and just relaxing at home. Email me at: ljm.design1@virginmedia.com

Absent without leave

Hello folks, sorry to have been AWOL this week but have been trying to get through lots of work....magazine projects, Christmas designs (my snowmen are melting as I draw them!) prepping workshops and demonstration samples etc.

Just a reminder that I'll be at Crafts 4 U 2 Do in St Helens tomorrow where it's always a fun day. I'll be demonstrating my some of my new stamp designs as well as some by Darkroom Door, along with Distress Stains, Perfect Pearl Mists and other goodies! Then, on Sunday, I'm at Dawn's Studio to teach two workshops - Fresh Spring cards in the morning and Steampunk style in the afternoon. There are a few places left I think, so do call Topaz Crafts if you'd like to make a last minute booking.

Last weekend I was down at ESK in Eastbourne...you may recall that I was going to have a paddle. Nobody told me that the beach there consists of pebbles and shells (as opposed to sand!) so I took a few ouchy paces into the water, stood there getting a good soak and then a few ouchy paces back to where I had left my sandals! Flip Flops are a must for that beach and I didn't have any - oh well! The weather was fantastic of course and I did a lot of walking on Friday afternoon before a lovely meal and early night (awful hotel, but I won't bore you!) ready for a busy day on Saturday. I must thank Gaynor and Anne for all their hospitality at the store and for the lovely meal we had that evening. I stayed over a second night before trolling home as it's a looong journey, so I didn't have to race to catch a late night train. That Sunday lie in (9am - how decadent!) was really welcome!

Since then I have been head down working, hence my absence on here. Thank you for all the quiz entries...I definitely made this one far too easy, so David will be having to draw a name from the proverbial hat! Shall have to go back to trickier questions next time! I'll announce the winner, and answers, next week, so check back to see if you have won.

There are still a few places available for the workshop day that Amy and I are hosting on the 15th May, so if you fancy joining the fun, just email me for details.

Well, my bags are all packed with inks, stains, stamps and punches, so I'm calling it a day now and going to spend some time relaxing before another busy weekend. Bank Holidays? No idea what they are?!?! Lol

Catching up

Hello all, it was a busy weekend. On Saturday I was at Reams in Derby, where it was a lovely busy day with a lot of fun thrown in. When I was leaving I was given this lovely bunch of flowers as a thank you...how nice was that? Excuse the state of the board that the vase was standing on whilst I took the picture...it's one of my workboards and very inky and painty! On Sunday I was at The Craft Room in Garners Garden Centre for another busy, and very hot day. Hello to all the lovely ladies and gents who came along and welcome to my new blog followers too!

I haven't forgotten about the quiz by the way, and will be posting it straight after this. I had planned to do add it on Monday, but got asked to do some last minuted work which tied up my time. So, get your thinking caps at the ready!

I have updated my demonstration and workshop dates at the left, so do check those out. As far as workshops go, I'll be at Topaz on Sunday 1st May where we'll be making cards with a "Spring into Summer" theme in the morning, and "Steampunk cards and tags" (round two!) in the afternoon...there have been lots of requests for more of the Stempunk theme, so I aim to please! To book either of these, just call Topaz crafts directly.

On Sunday 15th May, Amy Shaw and myself will be hosting a full day of cardmaking in Lower Darwen, Blackburn. Amy will be teaching the morning workshop and I'll be teaching the afternoon one...as mine is likely to be the messy one! The cost for the full day is £30, and if you're interested, please email me on ljm.design@ntlworld.com for more details. Hope to see you there, it will be a lot of fun!

On Friday I'll be trolling down to Eastbourne to demonstrate at ESK on Saturday. I'm sure I'll be fitting a paddle in there somewhere, as I'm staying over on Saturday before coming back on Sunday. Hope to see lots of my southern friends there!

Meanwhile, you just have time to join in my sister's ATC swap....great fun and you have the chance to win Heather's gorgeous Cabinet Card. Yummy!

Okay, I think I had better get that quiz posted!

Paddling and Paper Cuts

Hello folks, hope everyone had a good weekend whatever you were doing. I had a lovely weekend which began on Friday when I travelled up to Whitley Bay in Tyneside for my demonstration the following day. It was a glorious day, vivid blue, cloudless skies, sunshine and a little breeze to keep things fresh. After I'd checked into my hotel I went for a long trawl around the town to do some window shopping - no luck with finding any "nicky nacky noos" for future Configuration boxes! After a few hours my feet were a bit sore as I had my boots on and it was really very warm. So, I set off in the opposite direction toward the prom. I had been really keen for a paddle and I just hoped that the tide would be out! As you can see, it was pretty much in and I stood for quite a while just watching the waves crashing in to the sea wall. I did try to capture the moment when the water exploded into white surf and, after I don't know how many snaps, this was the best I could do! Doesn't do justice to the height and power of some of the wave crashes that were quite spectacular. To the left of me was a ramp down to the beach and the sea was going out, so I made my way down to the sand. There were a few people walking along with their dogs which were enjoying the sea of course. I took off my boots and socks, rolled up my trousers and headed towards the water....crikey, it bwas freezing! The first wave nearly knocked me over, but, once I had managed to breathe again (!) the water was so refreshing and you can't beat the feeling of sand underfoot. I had a really long walk in and out of the water and then clambered onto some rocks at the edge of the beach where I sat, poured water over my tootsies to wash off the sand and put my socks and boots back on. My feet were tingling but all feeling of weariness had left them! I then had a wander around the beach side of town and decided to have a bit of fun in the arcade - well you have to don't you?! I set myself a limit and got a pile of 2p pieces....I only like the coin pushing machines! I managed to win two keyrings and a weird little angel before I ran out of coins!
Next day I was at Papercuts - A Slice of Imagination for their grand opening day. It was a busy old day and I must say hello to all the ladies (and some husbands) who came along - it was lovely to meet you all. Here are Joanne and her mum Shirley behind the counter, looking very happy mid way through their first day.And this is the shop front - it was such lovely weather that the door was open all day, and you can just see my demonstration table inside. The shop is in Roxburgh House, just beside the shopping arcade on Park Avenue. Here are just a couple of the cards that I made - I was focussing on Martha Stewart punches and Distress inks. This one has the very useful Infinity Loop on the left, the PATP is the Flowers CET (I call it the Pansy set!) and the large butterfly punch. Really simple card that I made on the day. Oh, please ignore the squished Liquid Pearl centres on the flowers - someone put another card on top of this one before they had set - oops! The stamped flowers were from the Wildflowers set from Darkroom Door, stamped in black onto gloss card and smudged with Mustard Seed Distress ink. This card has the same punches (except for the Loop) but I've used TH Vintage Shabby paper for the PATP mat. I'm really trying to use some different colours than my usual favourites as you can see! Very simple cards, but sometimes simple is best! Well, I must get on with work now. I am sorting everything out for my workshops at Topaz this coming Sunday. In the morning we'll be making Steampunk style cards in a two hour class. We'll be using new stamps from Tim Holtz and Andy Skinner who is a new designer for Personal Impressions. All the new PI stamps will be available very soon, but everyone on this Sunday's classes will be using pre production sets that I have in advance. The Steampunk cards are great for men or teens - two of the trickiest groups to make cards for! They will feature Top Hatted Victorians, watches, wings and....oh, all sorts of eclectic images! In the afternoon we will be making cards using my new designs. We'll be stamping onto book pages and using paints, pens, inks etc to create a range of cards in this three hour class. I just checked and there are some places still available if you would like to come along to join in the fun. Please contact Topaz direct on 01254 356501 if you'd like more information.
Meanwhile, I'm off to Hobbycraft in Chester on Saturday to join in their fifth anniversary celebrations. I'll be demonstrating Ranger products, MS punches and stamping, so do pop in if you're in the area. Right, I'd better press on! Have a good week everyone. Lindsay

Drawing pains!

Well, it's a lovely sunny day here, so hope the weather's good where you are. It should be a great day for drawing, but, for some reason, my back has decided to twinge rather nastily, so I am struggling somewhat. If I stay in the same position for too long it starts to get painful, so I am a bit too wriggly for concentrating on detailed work! Still, work has to be done, so I will have to press on. No idea why my back is suddenly being gyppy, but guess I probably just slept in one position for too long. Moan over!
It was a really fun day on Saturday at Topaz. Everyone was in a quite frivolous mood as you can see in both of these pictures. Amy.........and Sheila! Both showing what they think of having their photos taken - charming! Everyone else, as you can see, was hard at work making their easter cards! Sheila is such good company on the workshops, always ready to have some fun and she does keep us in stitches! Here's a picture of the afternoon's workshop where the ladies were all decorating and filling Sahdow Boxes. There's me, floating about with the tin of alcohol inks for the ladies to colour silver keys to make them look more aged. Lots of concentration going on here! And look who turned up and tried to pinch my Ranger workshop canvasses! Terry has lost so much weight now that he can't hide as much stash now as he used to..... ....so it looks like Joanne will fail in her attempt to get him to pocket the third canvass! Lol! In case you don't know, Terry "pinching" my stash is a regular episode when we see each other - and he really isn't a criminal - honest!
Well, this was just a quickie post to say hello while I'm just having my coffee break. So, back to work now! Lindsay
PS if you fancy having a fun day with me at Topaz, do check out my next workshop dates on the left.

Wednesday....already?

It can't be Wednesday already. Where is this week vanishing to? It seems only a couple of days since we were in Liverpool, but no, it's actually four...crikey. (See how good I am being about not using exclamation marks?!) (ooops!).
I have been carrying on making show samples for Stitches all week and, looking down at my work area, and realising that it was, indeed Wednesday, I thought I'd share my mess with you.....well, why should I suffer alone?! As you can see, I'm being as tidy as usual! Apart from all my usual things, I have had my laptop, diary, mobile and landline phones (I know....but one is for dialling out and one is for incoming calls....don't ask...it's to do with dodgy buttons!) close at hand this week to deal with last minute, pre show organising. Also, don't ask why there is a little hot water bottle there! This was taken near the end of my work day, so it does look incredibly messy, and of course, half an hour earlier it was as tidy as anything.....mmmm, right....!Also, look who popped by just to see if she could help! This is Speckle who is one of Fred's offspring - Fred is our most long standing visitor and my favourite. I think Speckle thought I was in dire need of her assistance given that she actually came in through the window and perched there, checking all my work! Well, this is just a quick post as the evening is wearing on now and it's time to relax for a bit. Just a reminder that after Stitches is over I shall be back on the road, or rail, and travelling up to Darlington for my day at The Art Shop on Saturday 26th. So, hope to see some of you there again for another day of creative ideas.
The weekend after that, I will be at Dawn's Design Studio on both Saturday and Sunday to teach more workshops. On Saturday we'll be making Easter Cards featuring stamping in the morning. In the afternoon we'll be making Shadow boxes based on Tim Holtz's Configurations and other Ranger products. If you are coming to this workshop you may wish to bring some "treasures" with you....little bottles, broken watches, old jewellery or any small mementos that you'd like to incorporate. Not to worry if you don't have anything, as I'll have some pieces with me and we'll be making some things as well. You'll also be able to add your own things to the box when you take it home of course.
On Sunday morning we'll be creating a mixed media Guardian Angel to adorn your wall. This workshop will feature colouring with pens and paints as well as book pages, gems and other bits and pieces! If you have ProMarkers you may wish to bring them with you, but it isn't essential if you don't. The afternoon will be spent making a Mermaid Art Doll. This quirky sea lady will feature fibres, painting, subtle glitter and other lovely things. She will hang from a shelf or on a wall to inspire your creative moments!
If you'd like to book on any of the classes, please contact Topaz Crafts directly...details are in my sidebar.
Okay, relaxation and a night in front of the telly watching the brilliant programme about the fascinating wildlife of Madagascar are calling. Lindsay

A weekend of fun

A whole weekend of workshops does need some stamina, but the reward is two days of fun, laughter and sharing creative time with friends old and new. We were at Dawn's Studio and on Saturday I was teaching two classes - in the morning we were stamping and card making, then in the afternoon we switched our focus to jewellery made using various Ranger products. It was such a busy day that not many photos were taken and the samples I made are, at the moment, buried somewhere in one of the many bags and boxes that are either in the boot of the car or piled up behind me. As soon as I locate them I will take some pictures to show you what we were making.
We used coated gloss card with detailed stamps and Le Plume pens to create the images for the cards which were embellished with Tissue Tape, twine and alcohol inked leaves as well as those gorgeous liquid pearls that I keep harping on about at the moment! You can see what Sheila thought about David taking this snap! They do enjoy some banter and mutual teasing! The afternoon brought Melt Pots to the table and we poured clear UTEE over stamped images set into Memory Frames, made a simple flower brooch using Claudine Helmuth sticky backed canvas, a pendant made with clear Memory Capsules containing various beads, shells etc and we finished with a simple (but, I think, everyone's favourite!) brooch made using Gorjuss Girls images set behind Facets and each with an Idealogy Bauble. These are something that are featuring in next month's Crafts Beautiful (March issue I think?!) for a set of Gorjuss Girls projects that I have done. As per usual, I think we probably made quite a bit of noise as the classes are always such a social occasion and there is always some good natured ribbing (who can pour the most perfect UTEE layer for instance) and laughter. David and I hadn't seen all the Topaz crew since before Christmas, so it was lovely to catch up with everyone again - Brenda was a star as usual, keeping us all going with "brews" and biccies in between demonstrating in the shop, Gill, who was manning the tills, Jane who was beavering away making samples and Dawn was also there, sorting out all the products for her forthcoming workshop weekend. On Sunday Mary was the official refreshments manager. As ever, Topaz feels like a home from home with everyone being so welcoming and happy to help.
On Saturday evening I stayed with Rena and Stephen, and, as always, they made me feel really welcome. Rena and I relaxed while Stephen finished making dinner (!) which was delicious...sausage, cheese topped mash and caramelised onion gravy, a glass of wine (or was it two?) and apple pie for dessert....very naughty but definitely nice! We sat and had a really good catch up before a wonderful night's sleep and back to work on Sunday. Unfortunately I missed seeing my good mate Amy, who had been going to come to the workshop that day, as she wasn't well at all. So, hope you are feeling better now Amy, and hope you can make the next journalling day.
So, Sunday was an all day Art Journalling workshop which we had so many requests for. I managed to take more pictures this time! Here are some of the ladies working away, cutting out some figures from magazines to add to their pages. In the afternoon, everyone did some face painting...that's painting a face for a page as opposed to painting their own faces! This caused quite some consternation at first as almost everyone was less than confident in their painting faces ability! I wanted to cut through that self imposed barrier and, as you can see, the ladies all proudly showed the results of their (in some cases, first) artistic endeavours....you can see Sheila peeping over her face which she topped with a tiny hat! We used Colourwash Dyes, book pages, paint dabbers and Gesso to create interesting backgrounds which were embellished with patterns stamped in acrylic paint, doodles and collaged images. Everyone was working in sketch books which I had provided so that these could be used either as practice pieces with notes about techniques etc, or as full on journals. I like the idea of a journal about journalling if you see what I mean!
Here are each person's favourite pages in progress at the end of the day.......this one is from Joleene's journal - making the background with dabbers, stamps and distress inks and the figure is a magazine image which Joleene has applied Gesso over, scraped away areas and then reworked them to create a completely transformed look. Joleene has a real sense of adventure in her work and just "goes for it" which I love. Next is Sheila's favourite page which she created with book pages, Gesso and paint dabbers. She really enjoyed collaging the magazine images together and creating the wings from painted book pages. She's also started adding frames and doodles around the image. I can't wait to see how these pages develop. Time seemed to be something that we are all very aware of as it was a theme that seemed to evolve in a few pages...including in my own journals. This bold page is from Elaine's book and she really threw herself into the process...we all loved the way she chose to use a "typical" model image and then changed her completely by twisting the feet, replacing her face with a watch dial etc. I love the colours too! And next is Kath's favourite page in progress......Kath made the incredibly delicate egg for me which I showed on here a few months ago, and she confessed to me that she feels quite out of her comfort zone when working with papers, pens etc. However, she showed no signs of that this weekend and here she used Gesso and paints over book pages and made a brilliant job of the wings and toadstools that she created from scratch. Kath also showed us photographs of some of the eggs she has transformed into works of art....they are absolutely amazing and we are trying to pursuade her to teach some egg decorating classes. Below is a really delicately coloured spread that Rochelle is working on. The gorgeous image of the woman was the starting point and Rochelle took lots of time to choose the placing of each image, the colours and framing to create a very flowing page. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rochelle's pages progress as she has a really good eye for layouts.Victoria knew exactly that she wanted to have a mum theme for her journal as she is pregnant herself. I really loved watching Victoria's work unfold as she started out quite nervously having never done anything like this before, but, by the end of the day she was confidently doodling, cutting, sticking and painting! A natural journaller! Ethereal was the word which both Sonia, Karen and myself kept repeating whenever I came over to their work area. This page is Sonia's and I love the way she has softly blended the colours and chose images which perfectly suited the delicate effects. There was a happy coincidence too as Sonia added the dove images before she realised that the book page she used had reference to doves in it. (Weirdly....I have Radio 4 on as I write this, and they have just mentioned doves this second!). Here are Karen's pages and she is going to add some crystals going from the outstretched hand to the oversized bauble. Again, I love the colours that Karen chose and, hard to see in this photo, the delicate crackling effect that Karen drew around the framed areas. Chris brought some of her existing journal pages to show us and we all loved the very specific type of quirky humour that shone through them. Chris is really addicted to journalling now! Here is her work in progress with the time them (told you!) and as you can see, like many of us, Chris feels as if she is always chasing time! Can't wait to see where this page ends up! Don't forget to show me next time, or email me a photo or two!It was a brilliant day and I have promised that we'll do another journalling workshop before too long. We'll concentrate more on words, doodling and drawing next time. Oooh er! Talking of future workshop dates, I have booked two more at Dawn's and, just to clarify, all the workshops which are listed will all be going ahead and we are looking to add more. Just check the Topaz website for dates and themes, or on here for my specific classes. The two new dates for my classes are Sunday March 27th - 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. Then Sunday April 10th, also 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. I'll be posting the themes for each class shortly.
Christmas has been and gone, but I thought I'd post a picture of the Christmas card which I created. Knowing that I had a lot of cards to send, and knowing that I dare not send bought ones (!) but was under so much time pressure, I decided to draw, paint and collage a piece which I then made copies of and signed each one. Just to say that I did not tear out Bible pages to use...I photocopied a page from Luke which has the Nativity story and then used this to Gesso and paint over to create a subtle background. I drew and coloured the Angel, carefully cut her out and stuck her to the Nativity page. I painted more copied pages and cut those into the building shapes before adding those as well as the painted hillside. The cards were all assembled and I used different ribbons and gems as individual accents for each one.For anyone who likes the style of the buildings....watch this space! Now it's time for some intense sample making for Stitches. Lots of exciting new stamp designs and I have quite a large new range coming out which I will post sneaky peeks of as soon as I can without getting into trouble! Many thanks in advance to my good friends who have stepped in to help me to make a display piece for my demonstration area at the show, again, I'll be showing you what they are up to as soon as I can.
Well, this post has taken ages with all the photos to upload, so I will sign out now and hope everyone had as good a weekend as we did. Lindsay

Breather night

Hello folks, just a quick post to hope everyone has a lovely weekend. I've had a bit of a relax this evening after a hectic few days of preparing my workshops for tomorrow and Sunday at Topaz. So everything is ready for stamping, making jewellery and Journalling...not all at once I hasten to add! I'm sure there will be something I've forgotten, but as we have piled four boxes, three bags and a couple of other bits into the car boot I am hopeful that everything is in there!
For anyone coming to the Journalling class on Sunday, if you have any of your own paintbrushes, pens and pencil, please bring them along, but don't worry if you don't have any, or don't read this....of course, if you're not reading this then....well, you know what I mean! I'll have everything with me but I know that I prefer using my own brushes etc, so thought you might too!
I really must try to kick this exclamation mark habit! See what I mean?
Looking forward to seeing everyone over the next couple of days, as is David, who will be acting as my glamourous assistant as usual as well as being the official photographer of course, so I'll post pictures of what we do in the classes.
Then next week is full scale preparation for Stitches. I'm really looking forward to working with this season's new stamps and will show you as soon as I can. I'll be taking my laptop with me this year so will be able to post each evening with some pictures and reports from the day...that's the plan anyway! This year I'm teaching two workshops with Andy Skinner who is an amazing ceramic artist (you can check out his blog in my sidebar) so I know that's going to be a lot of fun.
Okay, it's just a quick sign in tonight really, so will be back after the weekend with photos and a few tales too I expect! Lindsay

Dates for next year's diary!

Hello folks, sorry it's been a while, but what with the computer problems, working hard to get designs finished by the end of this week and sorting out Christmas cards I have struggled to have time to post on here!
Anyway, I had a very eventful time in Norwich at the weekend....yet another horrendous train journey on the way down, which I will post on my rant blog as soon as I can. Let's just say that it involved two females who were drinking and getting drunker and more foul by the minute, and a ticket collector (I won't use the word "guard") who was unwilling to put the rest of the passengers first. After checking into my hotel I spent six hours wandering around the city centre and on walking back, I managed to find what was probably the last remaining piece of ice in Norwich and do a spectacular dive through the air that ended with me skinning my elbow and knee!
Saturday, at the new Hobbycraft store, was a much more pleasant experience however! Hello to everyone that came along - hope you are getting on well with the distressing, the punching and the stamping! The day went by really quickly and I then looked forward to getting home...I had a four and a half hour journey but, as it was on one train, I didn't have any lugging bags about to bother with. Instead, the train had no heating! Oh well, guess I had to finish my 2010's travels with a humdinger of train journeys!
So, to the title of this post...I will be adding some dates to my sidebar and these will include workshops at Dawn Bibby's design studio. I spoke with Amy today, so we have arranged the first set of classes. Those who were asking (you know who you are!) will be happy to know that we have included the all day journalling class. There will also be a couple of two hour card making workshops as well as the normal three hour classes, including making jewellery using Ranger products, a Shadow box, mixed media Guardian Angel and a Mermaid Art Doll! Please check the sidebar for more details, dates and prices. All classes are booked through Dawn's Studio...there's a link in my sidebar. I have some demonstration dates around the country...I only have dates and places at the moment and will post more details next year - yikes, that sounds terrible! Keep your eyes peeled for some special guests at Dawn's in February too!
Many thanks for all the Christmas cards and gifts we have received. I can't tell you how fortunate we feel to have got to know so many special people this year. Our cards are either on their way, still being made, or about to be posted! Hopefully they will all arrive before Christmas....fingers crossed and weather allowing!
I have a few more days of intense work and then can start thinking about relaxing for a couple of weeks over Christmas. I always start to feel really drained in December, so that little break is just what's needed...guess most of us feel that way.
So, I'll sign off and get the dates onto the sidebar as promised! Lindsay

This weekend's workshops

I've been busily working on some of next year's stamp designs this week, along with getting everything ready for the two workshops that I'm teaching this Saturday at Dawn Bibby's Design Studio. The afternoon class (Christmas Cute but Clever...or is that Clever but Cute?!?!) is completely booked up, but there some places on the morning class which is an introduction to Art Journalling. If you fancy coming along to join in the creative fun, then just give Topaz Crafts (website in my sidebar) a call to book a place. We'll be creating backgrounds and working on loose pages that comprise doodling, words, drawing and collaging. Here's one of mine at the drawing stage - no prizes for spotting the blank space where a word is missing! It's now been filled! I'll post a picture of tyhe completed page, plus some others, after the weekend.
For those of you who are already booked on this workshop, if you have any of your own colouring mediums (Promarkers, Copics, Brush pens, coloured pencils etc) please bring them with you, as well as a pencil, ruler and eraser. If you have any drawing pens then bring them along as the more the merrier. Don't worry if you don't have any of the above as I will be bringing things of course. I'll also have some glossy magazines and book pages with me, but, again, if you'd like to bring some with you, that would be great. We'll be altering some magazine images and using book pages as part of backgrounds. If you want to start a full on journal, feel free to bring a plain notebook that you can work in, otherwise, we'll be creating single pages that you can make up into a journal by adding more pages later. Hope all that makes sense! In other words, you can come with nothing, or you can bring any of the above!
On Sunday I'll be in Dawn's Studio all day and will be concentrating on Halloween and Christmas themes...I'm sure that I'll be making a few tags!
I have recovered from my spooky hotel stay, and now looking back on it as a rather exciting experience....even though, at the time, I was pretty nervous! I did, as a few people have suggested, ask whatever it was to let me have a peaceful night's sleep, so maybe I had a quieter night than I could have done! The bathroom light at home has still been going out, but only when I'm in there....odd, even though I know it is just a loose fitting!
So, I shall look forward to seeing everyone at the weekend and will be sure to show you what we get up to. Best, uplifting wishes to those who I know are not feeling great just now. Lindsay

New workshop dates

Rena and I have arranged a couple more workshops to be held at Dawn's studio, so thought I'd update all my classes in this post as it may be a week or two till they go into my sidebar. So, as of now, the forthcoming workshops are:
Saturday 23rd October 10am-1pm: "An introduction to Art Journalling".....creating backgrounds, learning to draw figures, doodling etc. Please bring your own Promarkers/Copics but if you don't have these I'll provide you with alternative colouring mediums.
Saturday 23rd October 1.30pm-4.30pm: "Christmas Cute but Clever"....we'll be using a selection of my stamps to create cards and more. Just bring your usual workshop essentials.
Sunday 5th December 10am-1pm: "Fairy Doors"....by popular demand we are running this workshop again for those who missed out last time. We'll be using Grungeboard, paints, crackle mediums etc plus lots of little extras to create magical doors that you can place in a room as an entrance to Fairyland. This one is definitely for those of us who refuse to grow up!!! Just bring workshop essentials.
Sunday 5th December 1.30pm-4.30pm: "Altered Christmas Decorations".....time to create some new tree decorations or to give as gifts. We'll be creating little works of art from scratch and recycling some tired baubles as well! Just bring workshop essentials.
All the above workshops are £20 each - please contact Topaz Crafts to book a place. The Art Journalling and Cute Christmas are filling up fast, so if you fancy coming to either of those don't hang about! Hope that the new date is okay for those of you who requested the workshop repeats, but I don't have that many free weekend days left before you know what! Don't forget to check my demonstration dates as I'll be updating these regularly as usual. This Saturday I'll be at Crafty's in Liverpool and in Strikes, Thornton (near Blackpool) on Sunday, if you are in the area.
Well, I meant to take photos of my Chunky Book and ATC's today but, by the time I had ferreted everything out from their "safe" places amongst all the mountain of bags and boxes that are still waiting to be sorted out from the weekend, it had got too dull. I will try to get the pics tomorrow so that I can share the wonderful pieces with you.
Today has been spent (as well as searching for things which takes an unfeasible chunk out of my day!) making samples for this weekend's demonstrations. I've been stamping, colouring, punching, die cutting, sticking etc. I'll be doing the more messy, inky stuff tomorrow. My theory was that if I did the "cleaner" elements today that I wouldn't get messy marks on my samples....mmmmm, not too sure about that though.....seem to find messy marks whatever I'm doing! Oh well, more snowflakes, Stickles and flowers to camouflage then!
Off to do a little more colouring now and will be back before the weekend with pictures. Lindsay

What a weekend!

It was hard work but it was a really terrific weekend spent at Dawn's Design Studio with a full day of workshops on Saturday and then demonstrating yesterday. Thankfully, after planning and preparing for the classes, (and bringing a personal record amount of "stuff" with me!) everything went pretty smoothly and I'm so pleased that everyone said that they enjoyed themselves...my main goal! There were some familiar faces and old friends (less of the old I hear you cry!) and we were also delighted that Sioux (Artyjen) had travelled up so far to be with us - over seven hours in her car! I was only sorry that, because of the crazy schedule on Saturday, I didn't get as much time as I would have liked to spend talking with Sioux. There was lots of excitement in the air with everyone being together though, so the atmosphere was great. One very funny moment came when Sioux suddenly let out a loud screech and we all thought she had done herself a mischief.....but no....Joanne had made her a special ATC and it was the sight of Richard Armitage's face staring up at her from the card which caused the reaction! Hilarious! Sioux made me a special ATC too - featuring Ben Murphy and Pete Duel (Alias Smith and Jones...going back a bit!) because we had both revealed that our teenage poster heart throb had been Pete Duel. What a surprise that was, as it was some time ago that we learned of our mutual fancy! Brilliant! I got TAC's from Sheila and Gez too and will post pictures of them as soon as I can locate them...that sounds awful, but I had such a huge amount of things to pack away that I put them somewhere safe and just have to remember which safe place it was! Everything is still in the car as we couldn't face unpacking it all last night. Better get it done soon though. Here you can see some of the girls in full flow (looks like Sheila was about to start handing round some of the toffees that she brought!) and just some of the masses of "stuff" under the tables. So, the morning workshop was a repeat of the Ranger Mirror project which was so popular earlier this year. Joanne and "Peg Leg" arrived early and Joanne helped us to get set up - thank you! It took some time due to the sheer amount of products we were going to be using. The Ikea framed mirrors were colourwashed and set aside so that we could then concentrate on making all the Ranger technique filled examplars to decorate them with. We started with the Melt Pot, making UTEE filled Memory Frames, UTEE agate pieces, UTEE over stamps etc. Everyone's pieces were different of course, and we had no accidents with the Melt Pots and the leads which I was trying carefully not to trip over from my position in the middle of the tables! After the Melt Pots were switched off, we moved onto Claudine Hellmuth Sticky Backed Canvas, creating transferred images and resist images by stamping onto the canvas with Multi Matte Medium. Next we used Alcohol inks on acrylic Fragments, on foil and a technique that proved to be very popular which was inking a glass piece and then stamping with Black Archival ink before removing the stamped image with tissue to reveal a negative. Here are some very concentration filled faces! We then moved onto Distress inks and Gesso (which I realised that we should really have done earlier as it needed to dry. Oops, sorry ladies!) and by then our three hours was well and truly up. Because the next workshop was only half an hour later we couldn't overrun, so everyone is going to assemble the pieces at home. Heather arrived mid morning and then joined everyone else at 1pm when the first workshop ended. Heather had brought the completed Chunky Books from the swap that myself, Joanne, Gez, Sioux and Sheila had all partaken in. Heather had wrapped each book in fabric and ribbon with name tags on them. The reactions of everyone were wonderful as Heather had done some an amazing job putting all the pages together. I'll post pictures of my book once I take them, but do check out everyone elses blogs to see some examples already posted. Thank you Heather, all your hard work was really appreciated by me and everyone else, especially as I know it was made extra tricky at the moment with your hand problems.
Well, David and I refused everyone's offers to help us clear the tables and set up for the next class...we sent them off for their lunch instead! The half hour vanished in a puff of smoke and soon we were onto the Matchbox Shrines. Here are two pictures of the largest shrine which we used Cook's Matches boxes on (just to give you an idea of scale). The first picture shows the tray pushed upwards.... .....and this one shows the tray pulled down.
My example featured an Opalite cat which I bought last year (it reminded me of our lovely pusscat, Cherry) and a lovely quote, which had a few of us cat lovers feeling teary on Saturday, which read "no heaven will not Heaven be, unless my cat is waiting there for me". The base was made from corrugated card - I love this free, lightweight packaging material as it can be used for so many projects. It was covered in paper, swooshed using Paint Dabbers and, once the matchbox case was stuck down, the whole piece was coated with Beeswax. I love Beeswaxing! The matchbox tray was painted, papered and filled with little icons, quotes and Beadazzles, and some wire was threaded through and beaded to create the pull. David had guessed that this would take everyone about an hour and a half! Mmmmm...no! There was a lot of work in creating these, and the beaded wires took quite some time, so the second, smaller shrine was going to be a work in progress. Everyone took home the relevent card pieces and papers etc and we made a start on the little matchbox with doors. Here you can see my shrine closed..............and open.
As promised, here is a brief run down of the matchbox element for this one: The tray is covered with a long strip of paper running vertically and creased well to sit neatly in and around the edges. Then a piece of paper is similarly stuck in horizontally. The cover is then cut in half down the length of the front to create the doors. Two paper strips are used to cover both doors - it's important to crease the paper as you go so that there is no tension when the doors are opened or closed. I used a gold Paint Dabber to coat the exposed edges of the card. Now the cover is stuck firmly to the tray so that just the doors remain unstuck. Back to a little wiring now! Poke a hole through each door about half way down. Thread a bead (about 7mm) onto thin wire, twist the wire together and push the ends through a door front and secure the ends with tape. For the second door, make a loop in a piece of wire, twisting the ends again. Ensure it will fit over the bead on the other door. Now push the ends through and secure inside as before. Now you just need to cut two more pieces of paper to cover the door backs, covering the wire ends. Easy! :)
For the plaque, cover a semicircle and a rectangle of card with paper, decorate with paint etc and then stick the semicircle to the top of the rectangle to make a sort of roof effect. Adhere the matchbox to the plaque before filling and decorating to your taste. I used a tiny bottle (filled with a mix of bath salts and glitter!) and made a "Love Potion" label for it and a tiny tag for the door that reads "Open at own risk". I cut letters from a Tim Holtz paper stash and added K&Co bees and a random paper key coated with Glossy Accents. The hanger is simply twisted wire and beads. Hope you like them - they were tremendous fun to make. Here are the girls and myself - minus Heather, who was taking the picture! - with their large shrines. Joanne is being camera shy and hiding behind hers!Well, I was well and truly shattered after a long day on my feet and all the talking! So, after spending some time chatting to everyone and saying cheerios etc, it was time to make a start on clearing up...ugh! Worst job! We got some sorted but had to leave some things for the morning as Amy was ready to take me round to Dawn's house where I was staying the night as her sister, Rena, has not been too well. We had a lovely roast dinner and relaxed on the sofa catching up, watching some tv and playing with the doggies! I slept really well and it was soon time to get back to the tip that was awaiting me on the tables at the shop. Oh well, we just got stuck in and then I was ready to demonstrate for the day. This included me colouring Sheila's necklace after I made a casual remark about how I'd feel compelled to alcohol ink it...it was silver and pearl colours, but now it's oranges and browns! It was another fun filled day, and I'd like to say a special hello to Caitlin and her mum. It was lovely to spend time with you and I hope you can come to a workshop - you'll be well looked after. I'll post some new workshop titles and dates shortly.
To finish, I'd like to include my quirky journal page! I wasn't going to post this one, but, on Saturday, some of the ladies really did seem to like it, even asking if I could do a stamp of this creepy character!!! I should explain that the inspiration here was that, in the mornings, with the sun coming through, I can see a really weird face in the curtains - you know how that light and the patterns can create strange images. After noticing him a few times I decided to call him "The one eyed Matador"! Anyway, coming back on the train last weekend, I saw an arched, viaduct type of bridge set in the beautiful scenery. I immediately recalled the Matador as the arch shapes reminded me of his big, tombstone teeth! So, I sat on the train sketching and by the time I got home I had got to this stage....... .......I then finished the drawing and coloured the pages, using Promarkers, over the next couple of evenings and this was the final result. I do like the colours but was cross that I made a mess of my writing! Gggrrr! Never mind. So, one creepy page was finished! That was a pretty mammoth post, made longer by the fact that the italic button keeps pressing itself for no apparent reason so I have had to keep going back over text. Very annoying! I am now going to get on with rest of the day, which means doing...nothing! This is my Sunday! Thanks to everyone who I was with this weekend, including Brenda, who worked her socks off keeping everyone supplied with teas and coffees on Saturday! It was a really great weekend and hope to see you all again soon. Lindsay

Three places left

I've just checked the status of my workshops this Saturday at Dawn Bibby's studio and the Ranger Mirror, morning, class is fully booked. However, there are three places available on the 1.30pm-4.30 pm workshop..."Matchbox Shrines". This is a mixed media class where we will be making wall hangings that have matchboxes as a focal point, containing mini treasures. We'll be papering, painting, Beeswaxing, gilding and adorning the plaques. The matchboxes will be similarly decorated and then filled with tiny ornaments, charms etc that I've been collecting for us to use. Wire and beads are also featuring, so there will be plenty to keep everyone busy! If you'd like to come along to a fun filled afternoon, please call Topaz Crafts on 01254 356501 to book. The cost is £20 which includes all materials. I'm looking forward to Saturday very much and have just finished sorting out all the materials for the classes...a pretty mammoth task it was too!
Just one photo to share with you today. I have done a couple more Journal pages but I'll just show you this one for now...the other one is a little weird to be honest!!! This one is quite whimsical. I used Sherbet Pink and Raspberry paint dabbers over my pages, the grid pattern coming from Magic Mesh which I laid on the pages before dabbing the paints over the top and then removing the mesh. The image (she looks just like me....!!! Ha!) is from a magazine as are the watch faces.I just wanted a pretty simple look to this one. My gessoed, painted pages are between my drawn and coloured with Promarkers ones - this way, it doesn't matter that the pen colour comes through to the back because the paint mediums cover it.
That's it for the moment then. Off to relax for the evening now - David and I had a fish n chips lunch yesterday and we have both been feeling a little "delicate" since then! My fish looked very grey, so I think that was the cause...we won't be going there again anyway! And it was meant to be a treat! Oh well!
So, looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday...I'll be working you hard! Then I'll be in Dawn's Studio on Sunday as well to demonstrate for the day, so do pop along if you can. Lindsay

A few photos and birthday fun

Hello all, I've had a busy, but very enjoyable weekend and have a few photos to share with you. The first ones are of the cards which I designed for the workshop on Saturday. It was, as ever, a little hectic but lots of fun too! This first one, features acetate that has been embossed with a snowflake design before being alcohol inked. I then swiped a black Archival ink pad over the surface and wiped off the ink to leave the snowflakes clear again. I simply mounted the panel onto card, added a white card "snowscape" and a few trees made with a MS punch were tucked in behind the snow. I stamped my Christmas teddy and snowman and added this, then stamped a greeting as well as punching the card corners with another MS punch (Aspen). Sorry the image looks so blue - my camera seems to like blue at the moment as every close up has a blue tinge! The next card is completely different, though still based around acetate. This time I stamped one of my favourite TH stamps (the serious faces lend themselves to adding an amusing word or two!) onto acetate, heat set the Archival ink and then painted the image from behind using Blending Solution to thin the colours. This is such a fun technique as the inks work so differently from paints - one colour will replace the colour beneath it, but, dabbling the colours on is a good way to get a very colourful look to the piece. I then mounted the piece over Personal Impressions Metallic film to give a glow behind the coloured image. Some distressed paper then seperated the image from the TH paper which I had used to cover the card blank. A distressed Adage Ticket, some TH tissue tape and an alcohol inked ribbon were the finishing touches. At my demonstration on Sunday I was asked, by a lady named Gail, what a painted acetate piece would look like over gilding flakes, so I made up a piece of white card covered with a silver and gold mix of flakes so that Gail could see the effect, which, we all agreed was pretty good and rather reminded me of a craft that I did as a child where we had black designs on glass and covered the backs with differently coloured sweetie wrappers! No picture of it I'm afraid, as the flashback was too much on the acetate. Anyway, hope you like this card. The last one was the one I wasn't sure about, but everyone on the class really liked it! The main image was created by colouring some white tissue pieces with alcohol inks in various shades. The stamped acetate was then flipped over and I piped Glossy Accents over the image, sprinkled on just a little fine glitter and then pressed small scraps of the tissue to colour the image. Once dry, I mounted the image onto the card (covered with TH paper), and added punched strips and a butterfly - these were from dull silver card that I'd alcohol inked. It's a very busy card, but sometimes I like going a little over the top! Here are a few snaps of the workshop with everyone hard at work! We also did some very simple stamping onto tissue which we then applied to candles. And you can see how everyone is concentrating very intently! At this point, I am now typing this on Tuesday evening! I started this post last night but David wanted to watch a film (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, which we've watched before, but that whole series can stand being watched a few times!) so I saved everything till today - more on today a bit later! So, back to the weekend...on Saturday night I was staying with Rena and Stephen (Amy's mum and dad). Amy and her little boy, Ben, came back with us for a couple of hours and we had another lovely dinner cooked by Stephen who is an excellent host! I had been warned that Alicia (Amy's niece) had seen something being made on a CBBC programme and that she was sure that I would know how to make it! It was some sort of tap...gulp! None of us had seen it, so we really didn't have a clue what it was that I was supposed to be making! (I have since googled it, so will be ready next time!) I decided that diversion was the best tactic, so I suggested that we make a magic card instead. We spent some time making the card mechanism, which has secret flaps, and then Alicia had great fun decorating it with lots of stickers. She showed Rena and Stephen and immediately turned to me to say "Shall we make the tap now Lindsay?"......hilarious! So, another idea had to be found, and I suggested that we make a Princess Tiara. This went down well, and involved lots more stickers, as you can see. Here's me crowning the little Princess..... .......and here she is the next morning in all her cuteness! On Sunday I was demonstrating in store at Dawn's Studio along with Mary who was showing card ideas and techniques with stencilling paste. I was showing the techniques used in the workshop as well as general ideas for Christmas cards and ATC's. Hello to everyone that came along, including Sheila and her mum - I'll post a photograph of them both tomorrow along with a picture of all the lovely ATC's that I swapped with Sheila, Elaine, Jacqui and Glen. I am going to have to sort out some more storage for my collection of ATC's soon!
Today was my sister, Heather's, birthday and we decided that, rather than me going over to see her, she would come over here and we'd spend the day in town. We have had a lovely day, looking round the shops, including an inordinately long time in Paperchase, where we stroked lots of handmade papers, picked some notebooks for Art Journalling in and generally had our eyes on stalks over all the amazing colours, patterns and textures! We ate a delicious lunch in Bella Italia and did some more window shopping...and a bit of real shopping too of course! Heather had received some cards and gifts from her blog friends and ATC swappers, so that was really lovely. I think she is having a quiet night in with a her family and a takeaway tonight after all the trudging about that we did! So, "happy birthday" again Heather, hope you had a good one!
Now, talking of Art Journalling, due to the huge interest I've had in my doodly drawings which I've shown on here recently, and mainly due to Amy requesting it, we are going to be holding "an introduction to Art Journalling" workshop at Dawn's design studio. It will be on Saturday October 23rd from 10am - 1pm, so my afternoon workshop "Christmas Cute but Clever" will now be running from 1.30pm - 4.30pm to accomodate the morning one. This will be an introductory class for anyone who wants to start journalling, doodling, drawing, and creating arty pages. You will need to bring your own colouring pens, such as Promarkers or Copics, but if you don't have these then you will be able to use my water based pens as well as paints and coloured pencils. Fine line pens will be provided for you to use. You won't be working directly into notebooks but will be learning how to create background scenes, patterns and textures as well as how to start drawing your own characters, naive figures etc. If you'd like to book on this workshop please call Topaz directly (see link in the left sidebar) and if you would like any more information then do email me.
Well, I must go, as David has been working hard this evening, so I am going to make him a lovely coffee now. I'll post again soon, Lindsay

What a wonderful weekend

I regard myself as being very fortunate in that I love my work, and a large part of the enjoyment it brings comes from meeting, and getting to know, so many warm and wonderful people at demonstrations, workshops and shows. This weekend was a case in point. I was demonstrating at Topaz Crafts alongside the very talented Jo, Gill, Mary, Jane, Brenda and Lindsay. Here is a bad photo of a stunning card, made by Mary, using stencil paste which she has cleverly glittered so that the sky shades through blue to white. The photo doesn't do it justice as the shaded glitter looked just gorgeous. These sumptuous, glowing cards were made by Jane and Gill, and Gill was also making some of Heather's beaded dragonflies - her book is on the left of the picture. And here are some of the cards which Jo was making on Saturday, building up "flowerscapes" to create these fantastic scenes. Again, my picture doesn't do them justice! Here are some pieces that I was making using the Paint Dabbers Acetate Transparency technique. It's really simple, but the effects can be gorgeous. Simply stamp your chosen image onto acetate - if using Black Archival ink you'll need to heat set it to stop it from smudging, so heat resistant acetate is preferable. Once the image is set begin applying paint over the image on the inked side. You can't be too pernickety about where the colours go as you need to work fairly fast here so that the paint stays wet for the next stage. Just dab the colours on, quite thickly, in the general areas that you want them. Now take a piece of white card and lay it on top of the painted acetate. Press it down and flip it over to see the coloured image. I like to use a brayer roller to smooth over the acetate to ensure that it sticks to the card. Simply leave it to set properly and the paint will have acted like a glue, adhering the card and acetate together. You can cut the image out, use as a basis for an ATC etc. I love this technique as you look through the acetate to the paint, so it has a very glassy appearance. Do give it a try if you haven't already. Here's my table looking less cluttered than it actually was! Nice cup of fruit tea there too! I stayed with Rena and Stephen (Amy's mum and dad) on Saturday night and they are two of the most special people that we have got to know in a long time. Over the two days so many people came along to pick up tips and techniques and we shared lots of smiles and laughter - great fun! Sheila came on both days and left me speechless (and David will tell you that this doesn't happen very often!!!) by bringing me a whole set of goodies for my birthday - along with some relaxing bathing treats she had made me a card, ATC's and three amazing book pages as you can see below. Aren't they gorgeous? Btw, the Alice ATC was from Sheila on Sunday as a bribe to go through Grungepaper flower making with her! (Not that I needed bribing I hasten to add!). So, along with all the generosity last week I felt very fortunate indeed!Next you can see the other ATC's which I received - clockwise from the top left they are by Elaine, Joanne, Sheila and Chris. Elaine had only just begun making ATC's so I got one of her first two - great fun isn't it? Joanne and Sheila's ATC's both had the same sentiment which was a weird coincidence. Chris has just decided to join in Heather's swaps, so I feel a bit guilty in choosing her beach hut card now, as Heather posted her latest swap theme is "Beside the Seaside", and I'm sure this one would have been perfect! So, thank you to all of you, including Paul, who I got several big hugs from! (they are always welcome!) It made for a special couple of days.
We have added two new workshop dates of Saturday 18th September, 1pm - 4pm "Matchbox Shrines" - this workshop will include Ranger techniques such as beeswaxing, distressing, gesso etc and we'll be creating a piece to hang on the wall.
On Saturday 23rd October, 1pm-4pm (and by request!) the class will be "Christmas Cute & Clever" featuring a range of my whimsical stamp designs. We'll be making cute cards with some interesting techniques thrown in!
Both of these workshops cost £20 - ring Topaz on 01254 356501 if you'd like to book. If you are interested, I am also hoping to run two extra workshops in the mornings of both of the above dates. The first being a repeat of the Ranger Mirror class, and the second being a repeat of the Fairy Doors class, as I have been asked specifically for these. Again, please call Topaz to enquire about these extra workshops. Should be fun!
What else has been happening? Well, many of you will already know, from reading my sister's blog, that my brother in law was attacked on Saturday afternoon whilst simply going to his local corner shop. Thank you for all the concern you have shown - Heather and Graham were both badly shaken by the incident, needless to say, but thankfully the yobs concerned were caught and are being prosecuted. I won't say what I would like to do to them. The week before that our mum had a very nasty fall which left her looking like something from a Crimewatch report, with her face all purple and swollen. Miraculously, she didn't break any bones and is as cheerful as ever - David calls her the "comeback kid"! I'm hoping that we have had our share of such incidents for the moment, fingers crossed.
I'll be adding new demonstration dates shortly, but this coming Saturday I will be at Jarrold's Department store in Norwich city centre. I'll be featuring Paint Dabbers, Alcohol inks, Distress inks, clear stamps and various "acoutrements", so hope to see you there if you live nearby. Well, this post has taken me ages, so I had better sign off for now. Lindsay
PS in case you miss the post below this one - my Blog Candy is now closed, and was won by MissD.
